The guideline was adopted by the boards of the participating professional societies between December 15, 2022 and February 13, 2023*.

*The DGSMP supports this guideline; in the DGSMP’s view, it can provide important assistance in preventing dysregulated screen media use in childhood and adolescence. The DGSMP would like to point out that the guideline by and large contains recommendations for prevention of certain kinds of behavior. In an update of the guideline, more consideration should be given to approaches that focus on the respective situation. The impression must not be created that parents are solely responsible – this could lead to the stigmatization of socially disadvantaged families. From the DGSMP’s point of view, this guideline stresses the great importance of an empathetic approach to all those involved in family counseling, which takes up (implicit) wishes, needs and behaviors in a resource-oriented manner and looks for a common solution in the spirit of health co-production.
